Holiday Spirit

This year I will catch the holiday spirit.

I’ve discovered the last few years that doing that is not as easy as it sounds. I mean…some people are just bubbling over with Christmas mirth and really when I’m all scroogified I want to shove them into holiday traffic. This year I’m going to try to be less of a scrooge. I’m starting early. I think that’s probably the key.
Right now, I’m cuddled up on the couch, sipping a Starbucks’ peppermint mocha and listening to Carol of the Bells (my favourite). The entire CD is different versions of Carol of the bells. You’d think that would get boring but there are so many different variations that they all sound different. It’s a lovely backdrop to the day. The temperature is dropping and there’s a promise of snow this afternoon. I’m actually hoping the weather report is accurate. I’d like to see some big puffy snowflakes.

So…everyday from now through the New Year, I’m going to do something to get into the holiday spirit and I’ll report it to you. Play along if you like. Today, I’m making a Christmas Card list and getting supplies to make Christmas cards. I make my own every year. It’s a big project but lots of fun. I’ll post a picture of a finished card on the blog when I make them.

Changing gears from Christmas, I’m off to write on my Valentine story. I should complete it today and turn it in. I promise a full report later.

Children: Growing up faster than I can believe. My oldest is quickly becoming involved in extracurricular activities. He wants to—gulp—go to a school dance. Homework avoidance 2 on the standard 1-10 scale of homework perfection.

  1. Snow? I’ll be happy if I don’t see snow until Christmas Eve, and it all disappears by the 27th:)Unless, of course, hubby’s home by then to run all errands and I can happily hibernate…And I too love Carol of the Bells!

  2. Don’t know Carol of the Bells. Probably would if I heard it. But as I don’t have a stereo or CD player except in the car, not likely to happen.I don’t have the energy to decorate every surface and yard with Christmas stuff. Does that make me scroogie?

  3. Because I like the feeling it gives me when the spirit does catch. It’s a feeling I’d like to have year round… a feeling of warmth, home and well-being. A sense that all is right with the world. A sense of tradition. Sadly, I don’t have that all year, but I know that if I can avoid holiday stress, I can retreive that feeling for yet another year…and I can share it with my kids. I want them to grow up with the same sense of peace over the holidays that I always had growing up…unlike my husband who had a horrible childhood and resents most of Christmas, yet likes the Christmas things I do to make his season brighter now.We do gifts, but overall, I don’t buy into the commercialism of Christmas. I don’t spend November and December on the hunt for the perfect gifts. But I do a lot of special things to make memories that will last a lifetime.

  4. I’m discovering I’m an every-other-year kind of decorator. This is the year I may go all out, since last year the house was still in shambles…but then again, my plan is to take December off and make tons of Christmas cookies:)

  5. hmm. last year i was so humbuggy, i threatened to put up a stripper pole with sweat socks on it as our tree. i am better this year. slightly. my mantra (for everything) has become: i will do the best i can…that way if i forget to make a craft for great aunt so and so or the person who pops in, i won’t have some sort of christmas meltdown. snow works the fastest for me. snow would help. or sex like you said on my blog. please tell me if your weatherman starts promising sex…i will be moving to where you are if that happens. 😉ho, ho, ho!xosommer
